The Girdle of Dreams - a Wanless and Helmerdyne Short Story

Vincent Cornier
3.38/5 (8 ratings)
She looked like a cast member of a horror comedy. With a dress of saffron and maroon. Plus, a veil. The elderly lady who presented herself to Lionel Blayne was small and reminded him of a weasel.

Blayne was the senior partner with Blayne, Ridley and Cowperthwaite, jewellers of New Bond Street in London.

She wanted to sell him something. This can't be serious, he thought, but then he gasped. It was a 16th century Italian chiavacuore - a bejewelled bridle gridle with gold and small scimitar clasps to keep it closed. Worth hundreds of thousands.

But it wasn't long before he began to feel ill, and it wasn't long after that, that the Intelligence Service was called-in to investigate a huge shoplifting at Blayne, Ridley and Cowperthwaite.
