The Unsolved Puzzle of the Man with No Face - a Lord Peter Wimsey Short Story

Dorothy L. Sayers
3.43/5 (35 ratings)
Several passengers, some first class and some third, are jammed together in a passenger cabin on a busy morning after a bank holiday when the subject of a recent murder in East Pelpham comes up. It's all over the papers. A man was found in his bathing suit on a beach having been strangled and his face mutilated beyond recognition. And only one set of footprints near the body, his own, and his clothes gone. It just happens that Lord Peter Wimsey, a noted amateur crime solver, is one of the passengers.

Librarian's note #1: this short story appeared in the collection, "Lord Peter Views the Body" from 1928. Whether it was first published in a magazine is not known.

Librarian's note #2: the story in 1928 had the title "The Unsolved Puzzle of the Man with No Face." When the story was reprinted in "Murder on the Railways" in 1996 and 2003 with Peter Haining as the editor, the title was shortened to, "The Man with No Face."
