After twenty years of less than perfect marriage to a less than ideal husband, Julia Ross decides she's had enough of living life the way you're "supposed" to. She sells the house and everything in it, then sets off on a camping adventure, living out of her minivan and camping in some of the most beautiful places on Earth.

In the Case of the Kantankerous Kite , book four in the Julia Lives in a Van cozy mystery series, Julia heads to the Everglades to participate in a census of endangered birds with her nomading friends Dottie and Penelope. Julia's never been to the Everglades, and she's expecting to spend a month counting endangered birds, riding her bike, roasting s'mores by the campfire, and enjoying her new life with her friends and her four-legged canine traveling companion, Toby.

Things start to go wrong the moment Julia arrives at the campground. For one thing, the place is overrun with cyclists who are there to participate in the annual Flamingo to Everglades City bicycle race. For another, the star racer is found mysteriously dead the day before the race starts. And, to add insult to injury, Julia's on-again, off-again boyfriend dives headlong into another relationship.

As usual, the authorities get the whole whodunit part wrong and arrest the wrong person. Despite her protests, Julia is dragged headlong into solving yet another murder mystery.

There's no swearing, no gore, no angst, and no sex. What does that leave you with? A great story set in the beautiful and wild Everglades with great characters and, of course, Julia's ever-present canine companion, Toby.
