It Stares Back: the complete psychiatric record of Mr. Evan Bartlett.
Both parts of the haunting story now together in one volume.
Part I:
Attorney Evan Bartlett is solidly in the running for a promotion at his law firm following a landmark victory in court. After a traumatic falling-out with his longtime girlfriend, however, he begins inexplicably suffering extreme panic attacks every night, rendering him completely incapable of resting. Exhausted, falling behind on his workload, and desperately searching for a solution, he eventually sets aside his skepticism about therapy and schedules a session with Dr. Jennifer Serona, the most straitlaced psychiatrist he can find.
As Evan struggles to hold his tumultuous life together, his nocturnal paranoia becomes increasingly more severe; more delusional; more dangerous. Through his ensuing discussions with Dr. Serona, therefore, Evan must come to terms with many troubling notions about himself that challenge his already-fragile sense of worth. If he cannot, then this mysterious fear of the dark will only continue to fester into something far more sinister...
IT STARES BACK is a two-part story that integrates elements of psychological horror into the themes of mental health and the various stigmata associated with it.
Part II:
[PART I SPOILERS BELOW]
Following an intense mental breakdown and a brief (secret) stint in the psychiatric ward, attorney Evan Bartlett is rushing to regain control of his life. With help from his new therapist Dr. Richard Ellings, he begins confronting some deep-seated substance abuse issues while also making strides towards his promotion at the law firm. Although he is indeed eventually able to get a handle on his addictive impulses and, subsequently, his profound fear of the dark, the traumatic memory of what he had experienced the night of his meltdown still haunts his thoughts and nightmares nearly a month later. As Evan continues to grapple with this residual paranoia, he also starts to feel the true pressure from the professional expectations he has set for himself building up. Then, when a certain shadowy hallucination suddenly makes a horrifying return one fateful night, Evan is forced to reconsider what he believes is real. If Dr. Ellings cannot help Evan make sense of this malevolent and mysterious phenomenon he claims to have witnessed, Evan may very well be driven to more desperate and depraved measures in his frantic efforts to save himself from his perceived impending death at the hands of a monster…
IT STARES BACK - PART II, the second and final installment, entails the harrowing and startling latter half of Dr. Jennifer Serona’s progress log on Evan Bartlett, her former patient.
