The Carnacki Casebook, Volume 1

William Jeffrey Rankin
4.49/5 (24 ratings)
Volume 1 of The Carnacki Casebook is a collection featuring three cases previously available individually: The Haunting of Halton Grange, The Barton Wood Mystery, and The Secret in the Library.

The Haunting of Halton Grange: The staff of Halton Grange, a property in Dorset just south of the tranquil village of Corscombe, discover a mysterious hallway in the manor that had not been known of before. Dark and distorted, they daren't enter. Lord Halton and Carlisle, the butler, brace themselves and venture inside. They find a part of the manor they'd thought had been torn down decades previously, and had contained the rooms of Lord Halton's Great-uncle Colin: A skeleton in the Halton family closet with an evil reputation, including accusations of murder and dark magic. Making their way to the ancient bed chamber, they encounter a creature that had once been Lord Halton's Great-uncle, and they barely escape with their lives. Realizing their dire need, Lord Halton contacts occult detective Thomas Carnacki, who enters the dark world himself and uncovers an even greater evil haunting Halton Grange. Part I of The Black Obelisk, a continuing series.

The Barton Wood Mystery: After purchasing the Barton Wood estate in Norfolk, Douglas Morgan couldn't wait to move in with his young family: The old manor was exactly what he'd been looking for, and the surrounding country was beautiful. But not long after taking possession, he realized something was terribly wrong at the estate: A menacing presence in the forest, something at the window of his daughter's bedroom, and a strange intruder in the basement all led him to question his acquisition. At his wit's end, and fearing for the safety of his family, he contacts Thomas Carnacki, the famous occult detective, for help. Carnacki finds a force at work on the estate, but is it of the Outside, or something more commonplace? And, what does it want of the Morgan family? Carnacki must investigate and solve The Mystery of Barton Wood, or the Morgans will never have peace again!

The Secret in the Library: Francis Shaw had been working at the prestigious Morden Library for only a short time, when a series of strange events caught his attention: Rare books and manuscripts, put away for the evening, found lying open again the very next morning. This seemed innocuous enough, and other library staff members passed it off as simply carelessness or the work of a prankster. But as it continued, a disturbing pattern began to emerge, one indicative of an injustice having occurred at some point in the library's past. Spending a night in the library expecting to catch the person responsible in the act, Shaw instead encounters a force outside his experience and enlists occult detective Thomas Carnacki to determine the nature of the phenomenon. Carnacki utilizes all his techniques, and consults famed medium Lady Anne Bennett to uncover The Secret in the Library!

About The Carnacki Casebook: The Carnacki Casebook is a new collection of stories featuring Edwardian era occult detective Thomas Carnacki. Adventure, mystery, and terror await as Carnacki recounts some of his most challenging cases.
