Born in 1930, Maureen and her little sister Oonagh had an unusual childhood. Brought up by their grandmother, living 'up a close' in Glasgow, the girls saw their parents only at intervals of about eighteen months when their father, a doctor in Africa, was on leave.
Later, Maureen and Oonagh were sent to a convent boarding school. Separated from Oonagh by the school system, bullied and unhappy, Maureen spent her adolescence throughout World War II in a state of misery.
Old Clothes and Porridge tells the story of a childhood spent against the backdrop of the Depression following the collapse of the American stock market, the launch of the Queen Mary, the Jarrow march, the abdication of Edward VIII, the coronation of George VI, six years of war and the victory celebrations when war ended.
