Hope (The Dogwood Plantation #2)

Clare Dundas
4.40/5 (300 ratings)
Part Two of The Dogwood Plantation four-part series is a family story and a love story. These themes are intertwined with the history of slavery and race prejudice in America. But combined with them is the constant hope that things will improve as time goes by.

John McLachlan, son of Soola, the slave leader of past years, is manager of the plantation, and Robert McLachlan, son of past owner Gertrude, is now the owner. These two friends from childhood agree in their effort to make this a kinder, happier place to live and work, where their children, Meggie, Janelle, and Charles, can grow up together with hope for the future.

However, as the years go by, new challenges, which seem insoluble, develop. John frets over major struggles and uncertainties on the farm. Robert seems unconcerned, until finally he comes up with a solution that will bring renewed hope.

The backdrop of the rising national political battle over the slavery question is much on Robert’s mind throughout the story, emerging in conversations with his friend. John is often concerned too with reviving and cultivating the wisps of African culture that have remained in the memories of some of the slaves. But as state laws on enslaved people, as well as freed people, become more binding, John predicts violence will be the outcome.
