The life and ministry of Dr. David Thompson could easily be the stuff of which fiction books are made. David's father, an abused and orphaned child, grew up to be a missionary in Southeast Asia. There, David's parents were murdered by Viet Cong rebels. His father-in-law was kidnapped and marched into the jungle, never to be heard from again, and his mother-in-law spent time in the Hanoi Hilton, but was finally released.In 1977, David and Becki arrived at an isolated jungle post in Bongolo, Gabon, West Africa. Since then, he has performed more than 6,000 operations, at least one-third of which were initially out of his area of expertise and training.

This book is not just about surgery, it's about God's ability to enable, guide, protect and teach His children who find themselves in difficult circumstances. "And it's also about humor", adds David. "So much of what we do is really quite funny when viewed from God's perspective" (and the reader's too).
