The Three-Cornered Sun

Linda Ty-Casper
3.90/5 (19 ratings)
The Three-Cornered Sun portrays the Filipinos' attempt to define themselves through the Revolution of 1896. Chronicling roughly a single year - the first part of the Revolution - its concern is as much with the consequences on individual lives as with the sequences of events. In the search for solidarity, a diversity of motives exists. The members of the Viardo family central to this story are distinct from one another - as members of a nation are - otherwise their loss or resurgence would not be felt. The novel presents such human presence and variety with an intimacy unavailable in general history.

Beyond the rhythm of simple chronicle rises the escalation of battle scenes, book to book. So too does the mood of combat move from the game-stage of social dilettantism, to the naive initiatory engagements of the masses, to the weary wisdom of those no longer able to tell victory from defeat.

The Three-Cornered Sun is part of the author's ongoing project, to discover the stages of national consciousness in times of crisis.
