This story appeared anonymously in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine in August 1818. In their anthology Tales of Terror from Blackwood's Magazine, Robert Morrison and Chris Baldick identify the author as John Wilson (1785-1854), a Scot who had careers in literature and law as well as being Professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University from 1820 to 1851. He was a regular contributor to Blackwood's under the pseudonym, 'Christopher North'.
