This dissertation deals with the Damascene Hanbalite theologian, Ahmad b. 'Abd al-Halīm b. 'Abd al-Salām al-Harrānī, commonly known as Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328), and his attempt to reconcile the human faculty of reason with the Divine Text of the Qur'ān and the hadīth traditions of the Prophet through his ten-volume work, Dar' ta'ārud al-'aql wa-l-naql ('Averting the Conflict of Reason with Revelation'). The work was written as a response to another work, entitled Ta'sīs al-taqdīs, authored by the Ash'arī theologian Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 606/1210).
