Why do more men go fishing every weekend in Britain than go to football matches or any other sport? The main advantage of having the water so near is that he can get a fly line wrapped around his neck when no one else is there to fall about laughing. Being quite unable to impress his fellow anglers by catching fish, he decided to produce a book on the subject as the next best thing.

The popularity of this book is a great consolation when he is cutting a Green Drake of a Wickham's Fancy out of the leg of his trousers,
