Blood for Pearls: The First American Genocide

Peter Von Perle
4.69/5 (14 ratings)
1498: The arrival of Christopher Columbus during his third voyage and the discovery of the world's richest pearl beds, trigger events that altered the course of history. Cubagua Island in the Southern Caribbean is the epicentre of those historical events, where inhuman acts create an unbreakable bond between Native American Charaima and African Dembe, both enslaved by the greedy and murderous European invaders and the sadistic pearl-fishing boat Captain Pedro, intertwining their lives, meanwhile hiding a cache of pearls in a buried clay-jar, in hopes to free their people. These islands were known as “The Pearl Coast”, where an estimated two-hundred billion oysters were culled, resulting in the export of about twelve tons of pearls to Spain, exceeding all other exports combined and depleting the oyster-beds forever. Within less than two decades the entire Native population is wiped out and the first African enslaved people in America were pearl divers on Cubagua Island. Hundreds of thousands of humans were massacred for the benefit of the European monarchies, proving that the real savages were the invaders. Peter Von Perle, an American researcher, and writer was born in Venezuela where he discovered his passion for the history of early American natural saltwater pearl fisheries. After a decade of research, traveling the world, unearthing relevant information about the pearl trade in the sixteenth century and interviewing a myriad of experts, from gemologists, museum curators, to archaeologists and he is now revealing his findings in this historical BLOOD FOR PEARLS.
