The Heron Legacy

Leona Francombe
4.31/5 (19 ratings)
Seventeen years have passed since Charles Fontaine last set foot in the beloved Ardennes forests of his youth. Too many restless memories…too many ghosts. When he finally returns to sell his family’s ancestral domain, Blancheron, he confronts not only his own lost convictions, but also traces of a medieval legend that still haunt the Fontaine property and reveal a mysterious family connection.

The Blancheron estate comprises a 12th-century ruin on a ridge, a drafty Victorian villa on the Semois River, and surrounding fields and woodland from where local pilgrims shuffled off to Jerusalem a thousand years before. With the last tenant of Blancheron dead—Theodore de la Fontaine, local history professor and eccentric—the task of selling the estate falls to his nephew, Charles. Along with Theodore’s pottery shards, scraps of chain mail and other moldy treasures, Charles finds an envelope his uncle has left him containing a Latin parchment, along with an urgent appeal to hold on to Blancheron…no matter what.

At the heart of "The Heron Legacy" is an ancient legend once sung by troubadours: the story of a strange village seeress and healer whose music enchanted a local aristocrat preparing for crusade. After her death, she was said to have taken the form of a rare white heron that locals claim can still occasionally be seen at the pond near Blancheron.

With the help of a famous medievalist and an enigmatic woman from his youth, Charles draws ever closer to the truth of this tale and its stunning historical revelation. Suddenly the words of his cherished uncle and mentor spark to life:
"Sometimes you can actually feel the past breathing…even after nine centuries."

An enthralling historical what-if from the author of "The Universe in 3/4 Time: A Novel of Old Europe"
