The year is 2030, and the bishop has removed Father Terry from ministry for preaching outdated Catholic truths. Instead, he has placed the priest in charge of the Angelscombe Pony Preservation Project, created to advance the cause of a new Global Church.

Father Terry's mission; to revive the hardy Dales breed and, together with four other cancelled priests, train the ponies to replace motor transport. The pope has bestowed his full blessing on this endeavour to help save Mother Earth.

But Father Terry's community is more interested in saving souls, so the priests clandestinely use their work with the ponies to catechise the local populace, and say secret Masses. Then Father Doyal shows up.

As a priest in good standing with the progressive Vatican hierarchy, the surprise visitor aims to exert his power for his own ends, and seeks out the most vulnerable clerics at Angelscombe.

Father Godfrey is already struggling to be worthy of his vocation, when the new pope publishes Theologica Nova Populi, a document throwing out traditional Catholic morals. The young priest is terrified he’ll cave into this false teaching, for if he does, how can he hope to become a saint?

Meanwhile, Father Terry is thrilled to be back with his first love, equines. Surely this is God’s affirmation that being a Catholic priest is not his only calling? In fact, is it still his calling at all?

Father Doyal dangles powerful incentives for Father Godfrey and Father Terry to accept the Global Church’s twisted morals, in Satan's bid to destroy the faithful Catholics at Angelscombe.

Then an alarming celestial event announces that the time for wavering is God's patience has run out.

Will His priests serve Him? Or the father of all lies?
