My Blessings Hurt: Short Reflections on finding the joys in life's struggles... And sometimes vice versa.

Christopher Sommer
5.00/5 (8 ratings)
Let me tell you about the genesis of the title My Blessings Hurt. Several weeks ago I was having a pretty average day, and by that I mean I was subtly crabby. I was not in a bad mood, but there was an undercurrent of unhappiness because the world had not revolved around me that day. Having a wife, 2 kids, 2 full-time jobs between us, and a house, all leaves me usually feeling like I need some "me time." Into the room walks my wife, in her annoyingly pleasant mood, and she can somehow sense I am in a bad mood but with little reason to be.

I look at her and begin complaining. I was maybe complaining about the chores around the house, driving the kids 1,000 different places, or any number of things to which I can go when I want to get myself worked up; but at some point she simply looks at me and sarcastically says, in the same tone you use to talk to a whining child, "Do your blessings hurt?" Do my blessings hurt?!?! What did she mean by that? It was obvious that she was feigning concern and trying to prove a greater point. Without being asked, she then explained that all of the things about which I was complaining were actually blessings for which I had probably prayed at one time or another. Ouch.

It is true that I have more blessings than I realize, and you probably do too. The challenge is that all of the blessings compete for my time, money, emotion and energy. Don’t misunderstand. I am not wealthy or even super healthy, but I have air in my lungs, a family I don’t deserve, and a place I can call home. But because those blessings can pile up, they sometimes topple over and land on me. These writings are just me talking about the pains of those blessings.

The point of these writings is not for me to give you any advice or tell how you should live your life, because that would require me to be an expert on something other than my own messed-up life, which I am not. So these writings are completely descriptive, not prescriptive. These writings are stories from my days, past and present, not even in any order really… some inconsequential and humorous, others highly consequential and less humorous.

So what is the point of these writings then? I guess the point is to make you feel something, to help you to feel the joys and sorrows that accompany the blessings in your life. I'll call it a win if these writings help open your eyes to a life that is filled with blessings, even if those blessings don’t always leave you feeling blessed. Because, as good as they are, let's just admit it… sometimes our blessings hurt.
