Maddie Nichols knows what it’s like to be different. She’s spent her life contorting herself to conform to the world’s definition of normal. A musical prodigy, Maddie last saw her parents when she was sixteen. Four years later, as her life is just beginning to take shape, Maddie receives a cryptic message through a stranger from her absent mother, warning her to run. How could they do this to her … again? Just when she’s on the brink of realizing the bright future in music she always dreamed of. Maddie accepts there’s no time to waste mourning lost fantasies about her mythical future. Instinct kicks in, and long years of training from a life spent on the run. She’s out of practice. It’s time for her to get back in the game. She needs to leave New York, but she’s afraid to risk trying to leave the country, not sure her passport, under the current alias she was using, would get her through security at either end of her journey. Maddie decides to head west to Los Angeles. She’s a musician. LA is the center of the music industry. Before looking for a job and making plans for her future, she needs to find out who her parents are, and why they spent her entire young life on the run. Not to mention, it would be nice to know her real name and why anyone would go after her, and where the money came from her mom provided through ‘hoodie man’ who delivered the message warning her to run. After researching her options, Maddie concludes Maxwell Cole, of Cole International, is just the man she needs to unravel the tangled threads of her family’s past. She wants answers. Maxwell Cole is in the business of providing them. Given he is also in the business of providing security and protection services to his clients, Maddie figures he can keep her safe while he looks for her parents. When Max’s team discovers Maddie’s parents are on the radar of two of the country’s intelligence agencies and have been evading their determined manhunt since Maddie’s birth, Maddie assumes there must be some mistake. How was it possible her missing parents were spies, or whatevers, or so vital to the U.S. intelligence apparatus the government was still searching for them twenty years after they started running? And why would they go after Maddie? She didn’t know anything about any of this. While Max's team digs for answers, Maddie's career in music is beginning to take off. As her fame grows, so too does the U.S. intelligence agencies' interest in her. Unbeknownst to Maddie or Max, there's a clock ticking, and the government isn't the only one interested in finding Maddie's parents. If they won't come out to play, their daughter is out of hiding and appears to have inherited their unusual gifts.
