December 1999, two lifelong friends, Joe and Jerry, decide to go on an ice-fishing trip for the final time before the Christmas holidays. The chance leads them to Matheson Island, where the friends start their journey early in the morning, heading down the ice of Lake Winnipeg.

“A bad day fishing is still better than a good day at work, right?” They are thinking when, the following morning, empty-handed, in the middle of nowhere, they get caught in a furious snowstorm. Extreme cold and piercing gusts of wind force the men to start back towards the island.

After a few hours, a far-from-joyful hike through the fierce blizzard gets interrupted by a tragic accident. Exhausted, tired, and cold, Joe involuntarily becomes the only person to count on to get his friend and himself through the wild weather back to a safe place.
