Eighteen-year-old Anthony Golino expects a purpose when he returns to New York City in 1945. But there’s no hero’s welcome for former soldiers like him, and very few opportunities around. The only job he can find is driving a taxi along the sleazy city streets. He and his single mother are barely scraping by. But across the street at the Diamond Ace Social Club, it’s a much different story. Feared neighborhood gangsters stack money high and lead glamorous lives. Anthony’s determined to get a piece of the bittersweet pie at all costs.

At the Diamond Ace, he meets the charismatic and highly-respected underboss of the Vieri crime family, John Sullivan—or Johnny Boy. Soon, Johnny Boy promises Anthony the world in exchange for spilt blood. The two quickly develop a father and son-like relationship. Still, Anthony will have to prove himself worthy of the underboss’ trust by any deadly means.

But after unthinkable tragedy strikes, the old rules no longer apply and life as a mobster spins out of control. Separating friends from his foes becomes a demanding challenge. A future with the love of his life, Nancy, is put at risk. As he grows into an adult, the glamorous perks become less than the tragic downsides. Anthony can’t help questioning the dark and bloody shortcut he’s taken to the American dream.
