A young woman named Polly was looking forward to meeting her young man, Richard Frobisher (or Dickie for short) at 2pm outside the Palace Theatre in London in order to catch the latest review together, but she was delayed.
She was still at the A.B.C. tea shop engrossed in a conversation with an old man. He was talking about a recent, unexplained death on the London Underground of a lovely young woman, a Mrs. Hazeldene. Was it suicide? He thought not. Without leaving the shop, he went on to analyze and explain the whole story.
Welcome to the short stories of Baroness Orczy, the author of the Old Man in the Corner series. Project Gutenberg shows 35 of them, with the first coming out in 1901.
Librarian's note: Fantasy and Horror Classics notes that many crime and detective stories, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. They are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
